Round one, like the competition as a whole, will be about numbers. It is expected that there will be more blowouts than the whale migration season. More lopsided scores than a one legged sailor with a swollen nut. Dare I say, more one sightedness than an Al Quarterman refereed game at Townsend. In saying that there are some interesting match ups. There is also interest in the big names and how they are looking in the first week of April.
Firstly, The NHRU would also like to thank the Hamilton Hawks and their association with the catholic church for moving Easter back, so teams can get some flow on, rather than play one round, and have a bye the next week. Who said Jesus can't play rugby?
Match of the Round: Merewether Carlton RL V Southern Beaches
Open the garage door. The ferrari, the Bentley, the Porsche, the Stretched Hummer, the Mercedes, the Mustang and the Aston Martin are being let out and on the loose. Even the old VW, Dan Garner, has had a tune up and is ready to get out and show his worth. MCRL will be to classy for Southern beaches who will be whipped into a frenzy by renowned man manager Tim Chidgey. Expect the scores to be close in the first 15 minutes, but as soon as MCRL realise that going through the beaches isn't that easy, the game plan will be out the window and the wingers will probably score a few tries to 0.
Score: 65 - 7 - Merewether win
Singleton V Wanderers
Wanderers first home game of the year at singleton, will be a tough one for them. For a club that has been struggling to recruit, they have done OK, and signed some England under 21 internationals, however they have lost direction, which is always a bad sign for a club nicknamed Wanderers and will not turn up to play. With the roster at Singleton looking good for the first round, the bulls should comfortably win this one. Apparently the two blues have requested that their colours be changed to yellow and white in the hope that they don't get tackled to hard.
Score: 145 - 0 - Singleton win
Lake Macquarie V Hamilton
With half the lake Macquarie pack from last year moving to hamilton in the off season, Lake Macquarie definately look fitter. However, even though rookie coach Nathan Beckett has little experience, the side would have prospered and learned more with two full hamilton squads playing in some sort of rep fixture this year. The only thing stopping this team from going on with it will be tired legs. They are defending premiers, so will probably do this blindfolded - Just another innovation by Newcastle's best coach Blubba Coleman to test his players.
Score: 35 - 12 Hamilton
University V Maitland
The only positive thing going for University this year is the fact that Nathan Foreshore somehow got his schlorship back. If the blacks win the toss, expect them to score at least five tries from the kick off, by their simple, simple game plan of holding the ball in the ruck and waiting for the uni team to fall asleep. by the second half, the contest will be over. Not even snow blower will kick them out of trouble here.
Score: 55 - 5 Maitland
Waratahs V Nelson Bay
This will be the most physical encounter of the round, with two teams stuck in the 90's. expect plenty of high shots, low shots and pot shots as the wealthiest club in the comp as voted on by this site storm home to be winners in the last five minutes. Defence will be the last thing on both teams mind, and as the shots get as cheap as the beer in Waratah Rugby club, and as tasteless too. this will make the scoreline irrelevant, with the referee only putting in his match report the send offs and the last try scored.
Score: 229 - 224 Waratah (Reported score 5 - 0 Waratah.)
There we have it. Lets get the drinking boots on and support your local teams. All wanderers supporters will get in for $150.00 at Merewether this weekend. All this will get you upon arrival is pride. feel free to comment by clicking the link below. Cheers GH

ReplyDeleteyeah well written for a skinny little strawberry blonde fag..and the blacks play some of the most intertaining rugby this side of the bridge. Beaches in the 1st major boilover this round, the chokers have too much pressure on them with the whole of 2291 knowing they will win. how bout getting a tipping comp going arse face???
ReplyDeleteso it begins.... another year of relentless bagging / banter of each and every team in the comp with no one or club spared....
ReplyDeleteMy tip Hamilton to defend there crown over Maitland come september with the tahs, greens and beaches close behind.... even the poons might surprise as they have recruited well.
Tipping comp u robust tub of mbay seamen, beaches, singo, hamo, university, waratah$. Wat do you think jerk!
ReplyDeletemaitland are going to get smoked. What is this crap about them winning, they have done nothing to get this reputation. They beat MC on in the semi's, big whoop, they then got smoked.
