The Hornet is well connected as most readers know. I have recently been liaising with the Waratahs media manager to try and get a bit more done for Country Rugby. Apparently he is on job share at the moment because of the dire financial state of the NSWRU, according to reports in the the Sydney Morning Herald. He must be quite pressed for time as he has failed to respond to my final email.
I have, for your pleasure posted the transcript under this paragraph. There is also a poll for all to vote on at the bottom of the page, to see if the Waratahs should send a representative down to help celebrate the NHRU grand final day. It is easilly the largest sporting event for Rugby in decades, with the two fiercest rivals playing in it. Not since 1980 has this been seen in the top grade. To cap it off for the Waratahs surely they should acknowledge the record breaking 6 grades in the Grand Final by Merewether Carlton.
Waratahs Media Manager
Hi there,
Could you please take me off your distribution list.
Cheers,
Brett
green hornet
Brett,
I certainly can , although I have had about 4000 hits to the site this week, which is about 3900 more than you have. Why doesn't NSWRU want to support whats good for Country Rugby. I can certainly write about your team if you'd like. It may even help get the crowds to Homebush stadium which is pretty much in the country anyway...
Surely being a media manager you are interested in all aspects of Rugby in NSW?
Regards,
green hornet
Waratahs Media Manager
Hornet,
Firstly, your reference to our website hits is unbelievably inaccurate.
Secondly, NSW Rugby supports Country Rugby which I’m sure the Union’s Executive Director and President would agree with. On top of that, I, as the Media Manager am also interested and regularly follow what is happening throughout the Country Zones, throughout NSW Suburban Rugby, Juniors, Schools, Women’s and Under 85kg Rugby.
Thirdly, this year’s Super 14 match at ANZ Stadium – which is far from the country; Homebush is in fact in the geographical centre of Sydney – drew the biggest Super 14 crowd in Australia by more than 4000.
Hornet – I had come across your blog before I started receiving your releases, and will no doubt continue to return to it in the future. As mentioned earlier, I regularly visit Rugby blogs and forums, in particular those related to NSW Rugby and not just Super 14 or Sydney Club Rugby. And while I will continue to visit yours and these sites, I do not need to be on your media distribution list.
Good luck on the weekend.
Cheers,
Brett
green hornet
Brett,
Accuracy was never my strong point, a bit like Kurtly Beales kicking. Hopefully we can both improve.
I'm glad to see you keep on top of the different zones. Because I am a hornet do you think I could get a run in the under 85 kilo match? The executive director and president agreeing on something must be a first as I have heard that, in the past, there is quite a bit of infighting in your boardroom. It will be good to see them both there in full capacity at no.1 sportsground, Newcastle, parry st, Saturday week, to watch probably some of the best young talent on display, in the NHRU premier 1,Grand final. Who knows, half back James Bertsos may even get picked up as reserve half back for your team. Hes pretty rad. Rad is short for radical, and if Bertsos was a surfer, not a Rugby player, he would probably be known as fully rad.
Speaking of geographical centres, did you know Tottenem, NSW is the village closest to the geographical centre of the state? Maybe NSW could build a stadium there and play. They could even invite Tottenem Hotspurs to play some friendlies there to help with revenue. It would probably be easier to get to as well.. Although it is on the Bogan river, and us being Rugby fans, we don't associate with Bogans, so i would understand if you chose not to re locate.
I am happy to take you off the list.I didn't know you were such an avid reader. My favourite Author is Tim Winton. Maybe I could even do an interview on you. Feel free to comment in the comments section. You could maybe even have the handle "Media Baron," I'd like that. One last thing, I am looking for sponsors for my site. If you can give me $100,000, I would gladly put you down for one of my third tier sponsorship packages. Let me know!!!
Good luck on the weekend
green hornet.
It was here were the communication broke up. Although, I do like his politeness in refering to me as "Hornet." I feel as though, the big issues I raised haven't quite been answered by Brett. Feel free to comment whether or not you feel that the waratahs should in some way acknowledge the NHRU grand final and support country Rugby. In no way does this article have any affiliation with the NHRU or its associated clubs. Don't forget to vote in the poll.

Agreed, It is an amazing feat by Merewether Carlton, even though i don't support them i support country rugby. NSW doesn't really do enough for country Rugby. I'd like to see otherwise, get that brett bloke down here at least. you made him sound pretty dum hornet.
ReplyDeleteHornet, what do you think Bertsos's chance of making the rep side ahead of tahs chris young and maitland luke cunningham? (whether deserved or not). On a similar note, are you worried that your continued 'blog bashing' of current rep coach Tim Chidgey and his credentials will have an negative effect on the selection of MC players who do deserve to make the team!? In other words do you think it is wise to piss off the rep coach and risk players in MC who deserve rep duties not getting selected because of your comments and your association with their club side!!?? This is a serious question!
ReplyDeleteThat is so choice
ReplyDeleteProbably not much point about the Tim Chidgey comment Benji...Don't know how many of the so called 'Bong Smoking, Drug Taking Merewether elite' would pass the mandatory drug testing bought in after the Luke Troy incident. I don't think too many would be holding their breath about rep selection after the obvious bias towards other clubs in recent years. If the surfs up we'll teach how Soss how to surf, and he'll have better things to do anyway.
ReplyDeleteFair enough pantsman, just a question from an interested observer!
ReplyDeleteBenji, If you read most of the hornets articles you'll find there aren't many that are biased toward MC. The only ones that are, are the analyisis in the last few weeks where MC has smoked its opposition. In this article he even distances himself from all clubs and the NHRU.
ReplyDeleteThe hornet hasn't brought up anything new in rgards to Tim, its fact he hasn't got his level 2. If Tim picks his rep team based on this blog, he is kidding isn't he??
If the rep selectors are influenced by a tongue in cheek blog, then they really are unprofessional, unintelligent and archaic. Maybe they're happy with sub-standard teams?Politics is in every sport. MC players may miss out on selection, however, they can really stick it to NHRU by winning 1st grade ( and the other grades ) on Saturday.
ReplyDeleteHow he still is even considered for the job. Blows my mind to get your level 2 you have to do 60hours of coaching or some thing. What team is he coaching? As part of the criteria is to not have an active role in a club side. If i am mistaken there is NO rugby as of this weekend games till the first Rep game. How does this work? Why don't the NHRU do what they should have Months ago, say they fucked up by not checking his coaching credintials when they interveiwed him a year ago and sack him and get someone else.
ReplyDeleteI think Dan Beckett has done a great job this year. So give it to him.
Level 2 smevel 2...the fact is hes the most successful 1st grade coach in the 00's since the singo coach of the 90's. look what hes done for rugby, bring country rugby back to newcastle as the premier region as he has done for the tahs rugby club. with people like him and others running the show..newcastle rugby and the waratahs should be save for years.
ReplyDeleteBenji, if tim chidgey or anyone else that has anything to do with the rep side takes this site serious enough to not pick MC players in the rep side because of a bit of harmlesss banter, maybe they should not be involved in the rep team.
ReplyDeleteThis article isn't even about tim is it? I hope the greens get some sort of recognition for their achievement. (I am a uni supporter.)
ReplyDeletei hope the NHRU is recognised by the NSWRU
ReplyDeleteAgain well done Hornet, the big issues as they happen. Very poor from the NSW Rugby not to send up at least one representative to the biggest club Rugby finals outside the Sydney area, again goes to show they don't give a toss about helping or developing the code outside the big city. Go the mighty Green wave.
ReplyDeleteDAN Beckett made his most important phone call before he had even been appointed Wanderers coach.
ReplyDeleteLooking for a block to build this year's squad on, Beckett rang Dan Kevill.
Kevill, a Wanderers junior, had lost his passion for the game and had not been seen for a season.
Not only did the rookie coach persuade the back-rower to return to club but also he installed him as vice-captain, No.8 and lineout general. It was a lot of responsibility for a player considered a loose cannon.
Kevill has lived up to the faith shown in him.
The 25-year-old, who works as a coalminer at Chain Valley Bay, was named joint winner of the Anderson Medal on Monday night.
On Saturday he will be a key figure when the Two Blues take on arch rivals Merewether Carlton in the grand final.
"I didn't really have any intentions of playing until Dan rang me," Kevill said.
"He told me if he got the job that he wanted me to be a big part of his plans. That was the main reason I came back. He was the breath of fresh air Wanderers needed."
It was Kevill's one-handed pass to winger Luke Simmons that sealed the Two Blues' place in the decider.
The handy effort against Hamilton is an example of what Kevill has added to the side.
"He sees opportunities and reacts to them and that is what we want him to do," Beckett said.
Kevill's ability he was the only player outside the metropolitan area selected in the Australian under-21 train-on squad in 2005 has never been questioned. But he has shown a more mature side to his arsenal since returning.
"He wanted to lead and have an influence on where the team was going," Beckett said.
"The move to No.8 has also played a part. That in itself means he has more responsibility but he also has his hands on the ball more. That gets him into the game.
"When he is in the game he is in it."
Though thrilled to receive the Anderson Medal, Kevill's aim has always been the premiership.
"At the start of the year, Dan asked us to fill out a questionnaire and one of the questions was, 'What do you expect to get out of the year?' The first thing I wrote was that I want to win a premiership."
That chance arrives on Saturday.
"To win we need to be clinical in everything we do," Kevill said.
"We have got a good balance right across the park, everyone complements one another.''
Yes anonymous it was about NSWRU but hornet mentioned james bertsos in the blog, who is a very good half back from what ive seen and just wanted to know his thoughts on pending rep selection!
ReplyDeleteAs for blue god, your comment oozes pettiness. Kurt Banks summed it up best and he is anti waratah. Whether some1 has a coaching cert is neither here nor there, tim has coached the rep team successfully last year to win so i think that justifies his reinstatement this year-as for beckett, no one wants to play rep footy for a wanderer (recall the al barker reign of terror!)
Green Hornet,
ReplyDeleteThis blog is the best thing you have done since I saw you drink petrol out of a bowser at the petrol station on the corner of Frederick St; that was back in 2003 in case you don't remember, which is likely.
Keep tackling the big issues and stick it up the NSWRU. I'm sure there will be more people at the game this weekend than there will be at the Sydney grand final; after all, who wants to see Phil Waugh when you can watch Adam Princehorn terrorising the breakdown? I would not be surprised either if the NHRU makes more money from the game this weekend than the NSWRU makes from its grand final. I hope the NHRU invests some of its windfall back into all the clubs. Could you get a comparison of the numbers and profit from each grand final for next week? Make sure you CC Brett with the numbers.
Go the Greens and whack-a-poon this weekend.
Specimen
Benji, I guess some are making the point that you need qualifications to be a rep coach. Forget success, you need these things in place. If NHRU asked for his cert and he lied about having one, then he should be sacked. Al Barker went around for years saying he was a level 3 coach but actually was not. He was kicked off the program. As for Berstos, yes he derserves a shot in the team as he is a quality player. There are many quality players in Newy who deserve a shot but politics will always play a big part in selections. Just look at recent years. Plus I think Merewethers lack of rep players stems from Dan Garner's blow up about his selection years ago and inturn told his players not to join the rep side. That may effect things.
ReplyDeleteBenji, wasn't it obvious that my mentioning James Bertsos to the NSWRU was toungue in cheek. I didn't even mention the Newcastle rep team, only the NSW waratahs. Tim is professional enough to ignore what I have to say, although Bertsos is definately the form half of the comp. Chris Young or Cunningham don't deserve a spot if picked on form as the rep team should reward the best players in the comp. No one from Waratah based on last years form should get a start in the rep team. Merewether, Hamilton and Wanderers Second grade sides deserve more players in the side than they do.
ReplyDeleteThe bald bumblebee won the anderson medal so maybe he should get the call up to half.
Any other thoughts?
Benji, you have no clue whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteHornet- Yeh i dig your humour. agreed he is the inform 1/2 and deserves his shot if he wants it! I know it wasnt related but i was just interested champ!
ReplyDeleteAgreed no one from tahs should get a crack apart from a few backs as back ups.
Tony Greig-blow ups and politics is a bit over my head but interesting to know, i hope more MC do get their shot as a lot of em deserve it, whether they want to play or not who knows!
I kind of ignore those ones sager special.
PS: In relation to article hornet i think NSWRU should have a representive particularly with the upcoming redevelopments to no2 and them wanting to draw profile games in the future + will be a bumper crowd too so will show rugby has a following up here, BUT i dont think they will care which sucks!!!
NSWRU needs to support country Rugby. they should even look at games being played at no. 2
ReplyDeletehas brett experienced the "the paul dan experience"? i am sure if it was pointed out that a former sydney 1st grade speedbump is equal to a second grade newy 5/8 he would change his mind.
ReplyDeletewhat have you ever done with your rugby green lantern? Id rather be a sydney first grade bump then a nobody like you.
ReplyDeletethe guy ripped his hamstring and groin off the bone since he last played in sydney which is why he has not reached the heights he should of in Newcastle rugby, so greenlantern lay off him, all u have ever done is pulled a heartlidge
ReplyDeleteNice little mention on Fox Sports rugby club about the local GF.
ReplyDeleteI do believe all the players who have deserved call up to the rep side this year have been. It will be interesting to see who takes the invitation as in past years good players from MC and hawks have turned it down. If that is the "real" Kurt Banks your comments are spot on. By the way Sager special is an imitator he knows nothing. Brown snakes HAVE run on un contested scrums all year but i think their mobility in the forwards will stop the MC outside backs scoring all their tries, brown snakes by 5.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Punchy
MEREWETHER Carlton will chase the "impossible dream" tomorrow when the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union grand finals kick off at No.1 Sportsground.
ReplyDeleteWith six titles up for grabs, Greens president Dennis Neader was doing his best not to get carried away.
"We're trying to be realistic. Winning all six seems like the impossible dream," he said.
"Winning any or all would be great, but I'm trying not to think about it too much yet.
"We'll just let the day look after itself."
In a first for Newcastle rugby, the Greens will contest every grand final, from Premier firsts to C-grade.
The Merewether women's side made it seven grand finals in all for the club, but they went down to Wanderers 19-15 in their decider last Saturday.
With a first-grade premiership in 2007, five straight club championships, and three minor premier sides this season, Neader attributed much of the club's success in recent years to their junior development.
"We pride ourselves on growing from the base up, and building a bridge between junior and senior levels through the colts, who have been in six of the past seven grand finals," the long-term club boss said.
"A lot of people put a lot of work in bringing the juniors up into seniors and keeping them there.
"We have six or seven players on average come up through the juniors each year, so we're really supportive of the colts system."
"A lot of the old boys, like the green hornet, got back together and got involved with the committee," he said.
"They helped restructure the club and turned our attitude and reputation around on and off the field.
"We're more organised now. Ten years ago we had players trying to run the club, organising catering and the keg after the game when they should have been thinking about playing. Now a lot of the old boys are involved in taking care of those things."
Neader was also full of praise for the Green Hornet and his role in the club's continuing success after he took the reins 2008.
"Hornet has an incredible work ethic, he's very driven and doesn't let too much stand in the way," he said.
"He's a good communicator and leaves nothing to chance.
"Hornet builds good team rapport so success on the field has come at no cost to our social culture."
Ok nobody has said it yet but im going out there and I expect to be shouted down louder then when Monty Simes screams at his own crowd.......Slime to go down in all 6 grade. I await all to retort. And I would also like so say that apart from all the sledging and bullshit that goes on in this blogpit, how good is grand final weekend. No matter who you support, Its a good day for a laugh, a beer and hopefully some good rugby.
ReplyDeletePunchy have you watched any Brownsnake games this year? the scrums have been contested for the last 7 games i have watched, the only pack to drive them off the ball consistantly has been waratah. which is understandable when they have an extra 200 odd Kgs packing in. I can confidently say the scrums will again be contested come 11am tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteserpiente marrion, Im sure punchy has seen them play, im also sure he played them.
ReplyDeleteThe brown snakes are renowned for going uncontested its pretty much all they do for the first 10 rounds, The regualr season lasts 18 rounds so its nothing to be proud of trying to make your point by boasting about going uncontested for the last 7 weeks. Ofcorse the brown snakes will go contested in the g/f, they have no choice.
JB
i was hardly boasting JB i was just stating that i know the scrums have been contested in the games i have watched which were the last 7. As a one team club with the oldest player being aged 26 it is very hard to put together a competitive tight 5. Admittedly in the first 2 years of our club we did not have the personnel to contest the scrum in all season games and this showed come finals time. This year however the scrums have been contested in the majority of games and we have in turn earned ourselves a spot in the GF. As stated by Kurt banks himself our scrum IS competitive. So after this years performance i hope we can shake this 'reputation' it seems we have earnt.
ReplyDeleteyou must be kidding yourself
ReplyDelete'kurt banks said our scrum is competitive'
taking that little albino's opinion on scrums is the same as having blubba and soulsby commentating on the syncronised pairs diving.
means f*&k all when he's never experienced it.
Oh Dougie,
ReplyDeleteIve experienced it alright...all my time at waratah, having the scrum come back over the top of me standing as a halfback.
And good to see you tah homos'getting personal again.
p.s cant be an albino as i have blue eyes you tool.
Maybe kurt you could take your expertise to your 4th and/or 5th club next year. Tahs didnt want you, hamilton didnt want or need ya, youre coaching (i still chuckle at the thought of it) c grade for MC! Wow the world reallly is your oyster! Maybe could coach a womens dike rugby team! You might find a bit of success there, with your experience in that area and all!!?
ReplyDeletecrossfit and victa, cry me a river you rowboat and lawnmower. people get sore legs pal, it doesnt make them hacks. must have been running around with two hamstrings off the bone as well as a couple of lambshanks for arms.
ReplyDeleteyou two are slow
